Community Gardens, A Space for Everyone
|
| |
Community gardens are for everyone. They are an important source of both learning and recreation. Through gardening, students learn different subjects such as biology and sustainable agriculture. The issues around city gardening also can be a good experience to develop youth understanding and leadership about our food system.
Our YouthGROW Program is a good example of empowering Worcester's youth by learning about a sustainable food system. Every year, young residents participate in activities of organic farming and community building. |
| |
| Seniors are another age group that has played a key role in the work of community gardens. They provide us with a wealth of knowledge about gardening and also bring their enthusiasm for gardening as a past time. On the other hand, according to elderly health specialists and social workers, time spent gardening helps seniors to reduce their stress and remain physically active. |
| |
| Our School Garden Initiative is also an important aspect of the UGROW program. By working with elementary schools to start classroom gardens we have helped cultivate future leaders in Worcester’s local food system as well as helped to create a healthy and fun school curriculum. |
