The City of Worcester's Actions Towards Clean Energy and Sustainable Living

City Council Unanimously Passes Clean Energy Resolution!
On March 29, 2005, the city council voted to support clean energy and passed a Clean Energy Resolution. More than 40 residents of Worcester came out to the city council vote to show their support for the Clean Energy Resolution. This resolution states that the City of Worcester will purchase 20% of the electricity used for municipal operations from clean, renewable sources of power by 2010. Click here to view the resolution in its entirity. Click here to see the sticker that all supporters were wearing at the vote.

This Clean Energy Resolution is based on the 20% by 2010 campaign being run by SmartPower and Clean Water Action in Connecticut. Click here for more information about the Connecticut 20% by 2010 campaign and a list of other cities that have passed clean energy resolutions.

It's important that your city councilors know that you want clean energy, clean air, and healthy communities. Call or e-mail your city councilor to thank him/her for supporting clean energy. Click here to see the postcards that were sent the city councilors by many residents of Worcester.

Mayor Timothy Murray Signs on to the US Mayors’ Agreement on Climate Protection
On February 16, 2005 the Kyoto Protocol, the international agreement to address climate disruption, became law for the 183 countries that have ratified it to date (Oct 5, 2005). On that day, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels launched this initiative to advance the goals of the Kyoto Protocol through leadership and action by at least 141 American cities. Mayor Nickels, along with a growing number of other US mayors, is leading the development of a US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement; the goal was for at least 141 cities to sign onto the Agreement by the time of the U.S. Conference of Mayors June 2005 meeting in Chicago. As of Oct 5, 2005 signatories include 183 mayors from 38 states representing a total population of 40 million citizens. Six mayors in MA have signed on: Thomas M. Menino – Boston, Michael A. Sullivan – Cambridge, Richard C. Howard – Malden, Michael J. McGlynn – Medford, David B. Cohen – Newton, and Timothy P. Murray - Worcester.

 Under the Agreement, participating cities commit to take following three actions:

•   Strive to meet or beat the Kyoto Protocol targets in their own communities, through actions ranging from anti-sprawl land-use policies to urban forest restoration projects to public information campaigns;

•   Urge their state governments, and the federal government, to enact policies and programs to meet or beat the greenhouse gas emission reduction target suggested for the United States in the Kyoto Protocol -- 7% reduction from 1990 levels by 2012; and

•   Urge the U.S. Congress to pass the bipartisan Climate Stewardship Act, which would establish a national emission trading system
