Earth Day Cleanups 2009 |
20th Anniversary successful!
| On Saturday, May 2, hundreds of volunteers from all over Worcester came out to get the city clean. They picked up tons of trash (we are still waiting for the final figures) and then celebrated at a community cookout. Honored at the cookout for their years of work in making the REC's annual Cleanups possible were: Don Abraham (Department of Public Works and Parks), Fred Confalone (Wheelabrator Millbury), Ted Conna (REC, Honorary Board member), Laura McNaughton (National Grid), Peggy Middaugh (REC former Director), and Steve Patton (Worcester Common Ground). Sons of Hiram provided music at the cookout and Women Together/Mujeres Unidas provided volunteers. |

| More about the Earth Day Cleanups... |
Every year, REC organizes Worcester's Earth Day Cleanups to take place at the end of April or the beginning of May. This annual city-wide event gives neighbors a chance to roll up their sleeves and take pride in their neighborhoods.
In 2008 the Cleanups were a big success: On Saturday, May 3, 2008 close to 1,000 city residents rolled up their sleeves and picked up 30 tons of trash and recyclables from 50 sites throughout the city. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to kick off spring with the Cleanups!
In 2010 you can participate in the Earth Day Cleanups by organizing a cleanup in your neighborhood or by volunteering to help out at any site. All Earth Day Cleanup sites must be pre-registered with the REC. Registering a site is as easy as filling out a Site Application form and sending it to REC by email, fax, or regular mail. Please note that the Earth Day Cleanups are for cleaning up public spaces - it is not permitted to clean private locations as part of the Cleanups. |
