Environmental Health and Justice Program

Environmental problems disproportionately impact certain neighborhoods, communities, and regions. REC’s environmental justice program focuses energy in the Main South and Piedmont neighborhoods where many people of low income communities are overburdened with environmental injustice.

Older and deteriorated housing, limited open space, high traffic volumes, the close proximity of homes to business, and employment in industries such as auto-body shops, beauty salons, and cleaning combine to increase health risks of residents.

These are the same people who are most often excluded from environmental decision making and access to information that could support taking on environmental problems,  due to the barriers of language and poverty, and the racism and classism in our society.

The environmental justice program works in collaboration with  local people  to improve the quality of life in reclaiming basic rights to clean air, parks and green space, community gardens, safe drinking water, and healthy homes and neighborhoods in the inner city.

The Environmental Health and Justice Program is multifaceted and responds to many different forms of environmental injustice. Click on the links below for more details.
