Moms of toddlers: Join our study

The Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow (AHT) is a coalition of citizens, scientists, health professionals, workers and educators seeking preventative action on toxic hazards.
AHT is currently recruiting volunteers (moms with children ages 2 to 4) for a new investigation of the levels of chemical fire retardants known as PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers) in the bodies of women and their young children from around the country.
Please consider volunteering for this study which is ongoing now until August 2006

Garden Season Kicks off in Worcester

Telegram & Gazette Article, April 3, 2006

Alyssa Smith, a sophomore at University Park Campus School, operates a booth for Toxic Soil Busters, a youth-run program affiliated with the Worcester Roots Project, at Saturday's annual spring garden forum sponsored by the Regional Environmental Council. Members of the Toxic Soil Busters, ages 15 to 16, test soil in community gardens and backyards for lead. "If there's lead, we plant geraniums and sunflowers, which suck up the lead from the roots," she explained. The REC event included information booths, live music and seed sharing for members of the Worcester Seed Exchange Network, local farmers who trade seeds among themselves every growing season. An organic farmer was there to answer questions. Gardening is "a source of healthy food for low-income families," said Casey Burns of REC, a nonprofit that addresses urban environmental issues through gardening. "It also promotes positive activity in vacant lots."
