Mountaintop Removal Roadshow
Friday, April 11, 2008
3:30pm
Worcester Public Library
Free and open to the public

It’s called “mountaintop removal” mining.  In West Virginia and eastern Kentucky, coal companies blast as much as 600 feet off the top of the mountains, then dump the rock and debris into mountain streams.  Over 300,000 acres of the most beautiful and productive hardwood forests in America have already been turned into barren grasslands.   Mountaintop removal mining increases flooding, contaminates drinking water supplies, cracks foundations, and showers nearby towns with dust and noise from blasting.
The Mountaintop Removal Road Show features a beautiful and thought-provoking 22-minute slide show with traditional Appalachian music and culture by Lexington, Kentucky environmental activist Dave Cooper.  Discussion to follow the program.

REMINDER FOR MAIN SOUTH RESIDENTS
The Main South Trash Action neighborhood group meets Thursday, March 13, 6pm at the Marsh Institute, 16 Claremont St. All are welcome!
The Main South Trash Action Group is a partnership of community residents and organizations addressing trash in the neighborhood through education and action.

Last year we organized two community-led bulk waste pick up days. Over 20 volunteers, with the support of the city of Worcester and Waste Management collected more than 250 bulk items from 42 participating households. Money collected from the pick-ups, plus a small grant, has allowed us to purchase trash barrels to be installed on Main Street and maintained by local businesses. We are also working to raise community awareness around trash problems and to build partnerships between residents, the city government, and local businesses, to improve our neighborhood.
Please join us to work together for our neighborhood.
We meet the second Thursday of each month at the Marsh Institute, 16 Claremont St. and would welcome new members. For more information, call Jim at 508-799-9139.

Taking place until noon.
If you would like to coordinate a site or volunteer at one, download this form and mail it back to us.

If you would like more information, call the office (508-799-9139) or email Melissa.
