Hi everyone! Just a brief check in with information about the Spring Garden Forum, YouthGROW and a few job opportunities.
Spring Garden Forum Success!
The weather couldn’t have been nicer this past Saturday when the Regional Environmental Council held its annual Spring Garden Forum on the City Hall Common. Families, children, students and volunteers gathered over the weekend for a springtime celebration to ignite enthusiasm for the upcoming gardening season.
A crowd of over 200 people turned out for the event to receive free organic seeds and to learn more about community gardening in Worcester. Local farmer, John Mitchell conducted an informational gardening workshop which was held during the forum and was well attended.
The event also featured musical performances by local bands and musicians. The three- piece band, Pueblo Nuevo attracted a great deal of attention and left many tapping their feet and shaking their hips to the catchy Latin beat.
By the end of the day all of the seeds had been distributed and a couple hundred people had passed through to enjoy the music, receive seeds and to grab information and mingle at the community group informational booths.
The Regional Environmental Council would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of those who made this year’s Spring Garden Forum a successful and enjoyable event. The forum was a delightful event and it was the perfect way to celebrate the spring season ahead of us.

Youth Grow Documentary
When people hear that there is an urban agricultural program running in the middle of main south, they find it hard to believe at first. When they hear that it is an employment program for youth from that neighborhood, they wonder why they hadn’t heard of it before. But when they learn that the program is governed by the youth using consensus, the comments are “Wow!, How does that work?” To answer this question we are planning on recording a documentary about the program. The best way to understand how the Youth Growing and Raising Organics in Worcester program affects the lives of it participants and the surrounding community is to see it for yourself. The Oread Street Community Garden is home to the YouthGROW program and what we affectionately refer to as “The Farm”. We will keep you update on it’s progress, and when you can pick up a copy!
