Urban Garden Resources Of Worcester
Urban Garden Resources of Worcester, better known as UGROW, is a grassroots, citywide community gardens network. UGROW is founded on the belief that together we can help create community food security by growing food in our own neighborhoods. UGROW poses an alternative to fossil-fueled, corporate agriculture and strengthens and beautifies our neighborhoods through promoting and supporting urban gardening. UGROW began in 1995 with 1 garden and 1 volunteer gardener with a vision to grow food in the city. Since that time, the network has grown to include 52 community gardens throughout the city of Worcester involving more than 400 volunteer gardeners. 14 of these 51 gardens are school gardens—connecting young people to gardening on the campuses of Worcester Public Schools.
Throughout the years, the REC has helped residents create and maintain garden spaces. In addition, we provide members of the community garden network with:
- compost delivery
- soil testing services
- organic seedlings & seeds
- gardening workshops
- and technical assistance.
Our work with community gardens helps build community by connecting neighbors with one another, including people of all ages and backgrounds. Members of the UGROW network include neighborhood groups, schools, communities of faith, youth, senior citizens, social service agencies and grassroots community residents. Please check out the photo gallery of some of our gardeners working and celebrating in the community gardens.
