Meet Marin Smith, our Development AmeriCorps VISTA!

Marin’s interest in local farming communities and local food systems was sparked by her family’s involvement in these communities in her home of central New Hampshire. Moving to Worcester, Marin was excited to learn about the wonderful opportunities related to urban gardening and local food systems within the city.

Marin got involved with the REC as a Mobile Market Intern in the summer of 2018, and continued her work here as a program evaluator with the Farmers Markets into 2019. In those positions she grew to love the community feeling the market has, and enjoyed meeting customers and seeing regulars week to week. After graduating from Clark University in 2019, Marin wanted to learn more about nonprofits in an environment outside the classroom. When considering a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA, she knew that the REC was where she wanted to be because of her love for Worcester, interests in environmental and food justice, and her life-long enjoyment in cooking and eating healthy fruits and veggies.

In her role as Development AmeriCorps VISTA at the REC, Marin writes grants, meets donors, and helps plan events. One of her favorite moments so far has been the excitement of the Fall Harvest Party in September, where she got to manage volunteers and meet so many people from the REC community. Outside of work, Marin loves to hike, roller skate, and travel. Her favorite vegetables are tomatoes, which she grows in buckets outside of her apartment in the summertime.
